Yawarakai (柔らかい) can mean soft and flexible. This is something we should strive for in martial arts practice. Yawarakai comes from the adjective Yawara. This was used to first describe the concepts of ju jutsu.
"yawara" can be considered an older term that essentially refers to the same concept as "jujutsu," as it represents the principle of "softness" or "yielding" which is a core element of the martial art, and was used before the term "jujutsu" became widely adopted as a blanket term for grappling techniques in Japan; essentially, "yawara" could be seen as a historical descriptor for the techniques later categorized under "jujutsu."
